Lewis was ironically critical of capitalism even as the rise of Fascism in Europe and Russia was clearly socialist in origin. I suppose if Lewis had foreseen the 100 million or more slaughtered by the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Mao and other “socialists”, Marxists during the 20th Century – perhaps he would not have been so smug in his dismissal of Christianity. He did have it right that many evil dictators and demagogues wrap themselves in a false patriotism, but he is way off the mark when he targets Christianity. The evidence of the 20th Century proves that mass murder of an unimaginable scale came from Atheist demigods – not from Christians.
As I’ve chronicled before and I’ll repeat: Hitler was no capitalist. He was a stone cold socialist and atheist. To repeat Hitler: “We are socialists. We are enemies of today’s capitalistic economic system, the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being, according to wealth and to property instead of responsibility and performance. And we are determined to destroy this system under all conditions.”
The illiberal Marxist atheist left loves to categorize National Socialism as a “right wing” movement – but the reality is that it was very much socialist in origin. So, it is actually impossible to say anything other than the Nazis, Islamists, and Marxists were brothers in their love of government control. Of these three movements, Islamic anti-Semitism and Marxism have become brothers in hatred of America and its freedoms. The Communist Muslim elected Mayor of America’s largest city is a warning that these real fascists do not simply go away. And to paraphrase Reagan, America is always just one generation from extinction – not from our enemies without – but the real threat is from our enemies within.
Fascism has recently come to America as either a terrorist Muslim cult, or godless anarchist cult of Marxists, and in NY we have an unholy alliance of both with the recent Mayoral election. They call themselves progressives or liberals, but they are not. Actual real classical liberals who founded this country and modern real liberals who support this country believe in freedom – capitalism, not dependency on the slavery and barbarism of big government.
