Gregg PopaBitch is coach of the San Antonio Spurs of the Mostly Negro Basketball Association. He stated that he was appalled, dismayed even, that some schools and citizens of America actually still celebrated Columbus Day. Of course, in modern woke Amerika, we are back to trashing one cultural icon and replacing it or him with poor native Americans now called “Indigenous People”. At many Govt schools, they celebrate “Indigenous People Day” instead of Columbus Day. So woke. You know, when I think of the word “indigenous”, it’s kind of like we have some plants or insects only “indigenous” to this region. And to the woke left, if say, weeds are replaced with flowers and fruits, that is an insult to the woke illiberal left – so we must do our best to replace the fruits of our labor with weeds instead. So woke. So progressive.
In this case, we have indigenous people – who were here before a European of Italian descent, funded by a Spanish Queen sailed the Atlantic Ocean to find a faster path to the Spices of the East and landed smack dab in the New World. Like Sir Francis Drake he used to be a hero to most of us, someone not just Italian Americans could look up to, but all Americans would admire for being the first European (not counting Leif Erickson) to discover America. Drake, in our little neck of the woods, discovered a little bay north of what is now San Francisco and had not only a very large winding road named after him, but low and behold, they actually named a local High School after him. But like Columbus, he has been cancelled. In his case, they say he actually carried slaves in one of his ships. Doesn’t matter that he was a great explorer and in fact discovered the part of Northern California north of the San Francisco Peninsula, he must be cancelled and replaced. So now in a mostly lily white high school formerly called Drake High, it has been replaced with the name of perhaps the only black teacher they’ve ever had – a track star – Archie Williams. How woke of them! San Anselmo California – and Archie Williams High. These white fools who inhabit this part of Northern California discovered by Drake are so full of themselves. Self-loathing hypocrites – what else can you say about these morons?
Anyway, PapaBitch, like most of the illiberal locusts of the left, doesn’t really know history, the good and bad. He only knows that dark indigenous people good, white Europeans bad – not him – although I do sense a serious sense of self loathing among the woke illiberal left. And it helps morale on his mostly black team if he insults any cultural icon of white European Americans. So, there is obviously another motivation for why he is so outspoken considering he’s just a basketball coach and not an Historian or a Political Scientist. The story now propagated by the illiberal locusts of the left that PapaBitch has bought into, is that Columbus slaughtered and exploited natives, and thus, he was bad. But as we dig a bit deeper we have a much more nuanced story to tell. And after all, all the great things America has accomplished by predominantly Caucasian Americans who immigrated from Europe, is of no meaning when you’re a social justice warrior like PapaBitch.
When you dig deeper, it appears that the real story is that disease, not armed slaughter, is what wiped out most of the “indigenous people”. Though the left would like to blame the slave trade on Europeans slaughtering the natives, the most likely reason for the slave trade and the decimation of the local population was because: “Between 1492 and 1650 the Native American population may have declined by as much as 90% as the result of virgin-soil epidemics (outbreaks among populations that have not previously encountered the disease), compound epidemics, crop failures and food shortages.”
But PapaBitch, like all the woke self-loathing white European lefties, knows best. Columbus was bad. Indigenous people good. Even the ones who had ritual sacrifices and routinely raped and pillaged the neighboring tribes.
As a historical marker, the primary reason we have Columbus Day in America was in direct response to the late 19th Century immigration of large numbers of Italians and the prejudice they had to endure. To quote a recent Breitbart article: “Although the first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States was in 1792, the holiday came to national prominence over a century later, when President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation on October 12, 1892, encouraging Americans to mark the day in honor of the Italian explorer.”
It seems, according to Alana Mastrangelo: “Although Harrison’s proclamation was made on the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to the New World, his aim in recognizing the holiday in 1892 had less to do with honoring the Italian explorer and more to do with encouraging Americans to be more accepting of Italian immigrants. That’s because the 1892 proclamation was the made in the wake of one of the worst episodes of racial violence in American history — the mass lynching of Italian Americans in New Orleans in 1891 that claimed the lives of eleven Italian immigrants.”
To put that in perspective, that may indeed be the largest number of lynchings in one place in American History. Yes, a bigger number than the lynching of Negroes in the South.
So to PapaBitch and the other self-righteous assholes of the illiberal left, there is a bigger story on the origin of Columbus Day. In San Francisco and the Bay Area before it became a cesspool like all major Democrat Controlled Cities in America, Fleet Week and the incredible show of the Navy Blue Angels flying under and over the Golden Gate Bridge – became truly one of the great traditions of Columbus Day in America. In San Francisco, the woke interlopers who have taken over this once great city, now complain about the noise from the planes, as they step over the homeless, the needles, feces and urine without uttering a peep.
After Harrison’s one-time national Columbus Day proclamation in 1892, President Franklin D. Roosevelt later proclaimed Columbus Day an official U.S. holiday in 1937. Since 1971, Columbus Day has been commemorated in the U.S. on the second Monday in October.
As the man once said – and that’s the REST of the Story! And if the Commies, Marxists and turd world has anything to do with it – soon Columbus Day will be no more and that will be the END of the story.
