UNC lowered their standards so any moron with a 2.5 out of a 4.0 grade point from a really poor high school can be admitted. Why? The real problem is a college degree is no longer worth the money. The student debt piled on unsuspecting kids while the Universities have ZERO exposure to that debt means that these colleges are only in it for the money. Once the Universities have exposure to the debt they impose on kids, then perhaps Colleges will be more discriminating with both who gets into their schools, how much they pay professors and administrators, and how much they spend on buildings no one will use. Colleges costs are way out of line with their value – and a fair market will have those Colleges with poor value fail. Then we might see things balance out. Lowering standards is what you do when you are more interested in buildings and keeping tenured do-nothing professors on staff than providing a worthwhile education. What we really need is: Higher standards. Fewer colleges. More trade schools focusing on employable skills. Not more worthless colleges and even more worthless administrators and do-nothing professors.
