The SCOTUS has given cities the green light to remove tent cities of homeless. Those of us who see it as positive thing are encouraged. Naturally, the illiberal locusts of the left are outraged.
From a recent article – one mayor in southern california summed it up this way:
“I’m warming up the bulldozer,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris, a Republican, of Lancaster, California, an exurb 62 miles north of Los Angeles. “I want the tents away from the residential areas and the shopping centers and the freeways.”
Shelter populations increased last year in the Antelope Valley, which includes Lancaster, but unsheltered homelessness rose more, according to the area’s latest point-in-time count, with more than 5,500 people sleeping unhoused in a stretch of high desert prone to extreme cold and heat.
“I get that some of these people have fallen on hard times,” the mayor said, “and we have a state-of-the-art shelter with beds available. But the population we’re talking about doesn’t want a bed.”
Institutionalize the Mentally ill or Drug addicts and there is no homeless problem. Period. Institutions have been dismissed ever since One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest glorified Mental Illness. Hollywood has a nasty habit of producing movies like China Syndrome and Cuckoo’s Nest that actually destroy the civil society with their propaganda. We do no service to drug addicts and mentally ill by allowing them to congregate in unhealthy tent enclaves – and it certainly impinges on the rights of neighbors and businesses.
Nuclear power plants energy death total is miniscule compared to people who die every year because they can’t afford or don’t have access to cheap energy to heat or cool their homes. EPA stat – 19,000 Americans have died due to cold weather since 1979. Since 2000 on average about 800 Americans die from heat every year – in 2022 over 1700 deaths alone. I count 12 fatalities related to nuclear power plant incidents since 1955 in the US.
Rational policy would be to institutionalize homeless and to prevent weather related deaths to have more nuclear power to give us cheaper energy to heat and cool our homes. There is no such thing as “freedom” in a civil society ruled by policies that lead to chaos and anarchy.
